  • Fresh Spinach = 04 cups or 2 cups frozen spinach (thawed and drained)
For the Sauce
  • Butter = 01 tablespoon
  • Onion = 01 small finely chopped
  • Garlic = 02 cloves minced
  • Heavy Cream = 01 cup
  • Parmesan Cheese = 1/2 cup grated
  • Gruyère Cheese = 01 cup shredded
  • Flour = 01 tablespoon all-purpose
  • Salt and Pepper to taste
  • Nutmeg = 1/4 teaspoon Optional
For the Topping (Optional)
  • Breadcrumbs = 1/4 cup for added crunch

Method
 

  1. Step by Step Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Spinach
  1. Wash fresh spinach thoroughly and remove any stems.
  2. Cook the spinach in a large pan over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, until wilted.
  3. If using frozen spinach, thaw it and drain excess water.
Step 2: Make the Sauce
  1. Melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Add chopped onion and garlic, and cook for 3 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle flour over the onions and garlic, stirring for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly add heavy cream while whisking to prevent lumps.
  5. Stir for 2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  6. Add Parmesan cheese and half of the Gruyère cheese.
  7. Stir until the cheese melts and the sauce becomes smooth.
  8. Season with salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste.
Step 3: Combine Spinach with Sauce
  1. Add cooked spinach to the sauce and stir well.
  2. Ensure the spinach is fully coated with the creamy sauce.
  3. Remove the pan from heat.
Step 4: Assemble the Gratin
  1. Transfer the spinach mixture to a greased baking dish.
  2. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère cheese on top.
  3. Add breadcrumbs on top for extra crunch, if desired.
Step 5: Bake the Gratin
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bake the gratin for 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
